Blood Car

Blood Car is set in the future, two weeks into the future to be exact. Gas has reached an all time high of close to $40 a gallon and no one drives cars anymore. Archie Andrews (Mike Brune), a schoolteacher/vegan, has decided to find a way to find an alternate fuel. When wheat grass juice is not enough he unexpectedly finds the missing ingredient…HUMAN BLOOD!!!

Blood Car stars Mike Brune as Archie Andrews, Anna Chlumsky (Lorraine) who might know from My Girl fame, and Katie Rowlett (Denise). This a independent film from the guy at Fake Wood Wallpaper and is directed by Alex Orr. The film has won quite a few film festival awards and it deserves it.

This movie is very unique in that it is very independent, very bizarre, and very entertaining. You can tell throughout the movie that this is on less than a shoestring budget but really it doesn’t really matter as they are able to keep you tuned in with the weird brand of humor. A bunch of the techniques used are very reminiscent of low budget Japanese horrors. You got the squirting blood, the weird humor, and the less than stellar acting.

As far as the acting goes it is average at best. Mike Brune is at times bland and unbelievable but his lines still come across well. The main acting comes from Katie Rowlett who provides some of the best moments in the film. Another good point of acting is when a detective interrogates Archie, who is told of a weird consequence that is easily the funniest part of the movie.

The weakest part of the movie is obviously the continuity. There are many times where a character is doing or holding something and in the next cut it has disappeared only to appear again. Along with that a hole in the top of the trunk does a magic act coming to and fro existence. First time director of a full length feature, Alex Orr, really shows his greenness as there are many known mistakes and the acting is not really improved on (which I get from watching the making of the film).

One final great point is that the DVD has a great slew of extras. You got the aforementioned making of, the trailer, a weird short film (The Last Last and the Tribulations of Johnnybush), an essay on the film, and a very nice followup on the end of the film. All of these tie in quite well to the film and give the DVD an extra spice to sweeten the taste.

Overall, Blood Car is a uniquely weird film on a low budget that suffers from many independent movie flaw. The acting is average, the effects are okay, and the continuity is washy. But the overall story and conflict of the movie makes up for it easily. Go rent this for total weirdness.

Final Verdict:
Weird Movie Rating – 4/5
Actual Movie Rating – 2.6/5
