5. The Moment Before Death
The cream Caddy pulls up into the house that Sandy grew up in. The house he shared memories of laughter and also hatred. This is the place where his father left them, the place his mother nursed, and the place where his mother disowned him.
He and Lucy sit in the car as it pulls up slowly next to the garage. Sandy blankly stares ahead as the engine continues to rumble. Lucy reaches over and turns off the engine causing Sandy to jerk his head to look over at her. He sighs in relief.
Lucy: Baby, are we going through with this or not?
Sandy: It, it doesn’t make sense honey. Why do we have to kill her?
Lucy: She knows the truth about me. She knows what things you have done and she disowned you for it. She disowned you for loving me as you would love another. She’s just like your father. Your mother and father never loved you.
Sandy’s eyes begin to well up with tears as he shakes his head in disagreement.
Sandy: NO!!! She loved me!!! She’ll always love me. S-s-she was the one who protected me. She’s the one…the one…
Lucy: …who betrayed you. She spat on your choices just like your father spat on you when he left.
Lucy hugs Sandy’s head and pets him softly. He stops crying and sits up. He looks into the rearview mirror and fixes his hair which has fallen out of it’s slick back state. He looks over to Lucy, places both of his hands on her cheeks and kisses her gently.
Sandy: You’re right. You’re always right. She’s not my mother anymore, she is a threat.
Sandy and Lucy smile before kissing again. They both exit the car out of their doors. Sandy tucks in his shirt as Lucy pulls out of her purse a pistol. Sandy grabs it as he opens up the screen door. Sandy quietly walks up the staircase as Lucy follows. He turns right and heads down the hall to his mothers room. He slowly opens up the door and sees what he doesn’t want to see. His mother peers over the man’s shoulder and gasps as well as throwing the man off of her.
Louson: SANDY WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?!
Sandy: The question is mother, who are you doing?
Louson: HOW DARE YOU?!?!
The man turns over and Sandy sees it is in fact Detective Travis Blinker. Sandy eyes well up again as this time it is not confusion that fuels this but rage.
Sandy: What the hell is going on here?!
Detective Blinker: N-n-n-now boy just, just listen here.
Sandy does not “listen here” and instead lifts up the pistol and blows off three shots into the chest of the detective. Sandy’s mother freaks out as Lucy smiles behind Sandy.
